Client Background

TP-Link, a global leader in networking devices, sought to improve the security and privacy of its users by integrating VPN services directly into its router products. Recognizing the growing importance of secure online experiences, TP-Link aimed to offer its users an additional layer of protection, particularly when accessing public Wi-Fi or managing sensitive information through their devices.

To achieve this, TP-Link partnered with PureVPN, a well-established VPN service provider, to integrate PureVPN’s secure, high-speed VPN services into its existing applications. The collaboration was based on an affiliate model, where TP-Link would earn revenue through subscription sales generated from their users. Importantly, this integration did not require the development of new apps or the inclusion of SDKs; instead, TP-Link seamlessly incorporated PureVPN’s APIs into their current applications.

Objective

The primary objective of the integration was to provide TP-Link users with easy access to secure VPN services directly from their devices. This would allow users to:

Purchase PureVPN Subscriptions

Users can easily subscribe to PureVPN services within the TP-Link application environment.

Seamless Authentication and Use

Existing PureVPN subscribers could authenticate and configure their VPN settings within the TP-Link app without additional steps.

Enhanced Security

By utilizing PureVPN’s robust network, users would benefit from encrypted connections, protecting their data from potential threats.

Challenges & Objectives – The client outlined key requirements.

Growing Demand for Online Privacy and Security

To stay competitive, networking companies have to step up—users now expect secure, private internet experiences as a basic standard.

Need for a Unified Security Solution

What users really want is a single, all-in-one solution that simplifies security. The goal? Build advanced tools like VPNs right into existing platforms—no extra downloads, no complicated setups.

Ensuring Seamless Integration
Adding new features to apps isn’t always smooth sailing. It can disrupt workflows and frustrate users. The real challenge is figuring out how to integrate new tools in a way that keeps everything running smoothly, without sacrificing reliability or usability.

Balancing Security with User-Friendliness
Stronger security often makes apps harder to use. Businesses have to strike a balance—deliver top-notch privacy protection without confusing or overwhelming users, especially those who aren’t tech-savvy.

Innovative Solution

To address these needs, TP-Link has chosen to partner with PureVPN, utilizing its comprehensive API suite. Unlike traditional methods that require additional apps or SDKs, TP-Link will leverage PureVPN’s APIs to integrate VPN functionality directly into their existing apps. This approach will allow TP-Link to maintain a consistent user interface while offering enhanced security features.

  1. API-Driven Architecture:
TP-Link will integrate PureVPN’s APIs directly into their existing apps. This will enable them to provide VPN services without the need for additional apps or SDKs, preserving the user experience that TP-Link customers are accustomed to.

2. User Onboarding:

  • For Non-Subscribers: Users without an existing PureVPN subscription will be prompted within the TP-Link app to “Get a top-class VPN.” Upon selecting this option, they will be redirected to a PureVPN affiliate page where they can subscribe to a VPN plan. After completing the purchase, users will be redirected back to the TP-Link app to begin using the VPN service.
  • For Existing Subscribers: Users who already have a PureVPN subscription will be able to log in directly through the TP-Link app using a secure OAuth2.0 PKCE flow, ensuring that their credentials are protected and that they can easily access VPN features.

3. Seamless User Experience:
Once authenticated, the TP-Link app will use PureVPN’s APIs to retrieve user information, including VPN credentials and subscription status. The app will also access server lists and protocol options, enabling users to customize their VPN connection based on their location and preferred security settings.

4. Security First:
PureVPN’s commitment to security will be a key component of the integration. All API communications will be encrypted using HTTPS, and the OAuth2.0 PKCE flow will ensure that user credentials and tokens are securely handled, safeguarding TP-Link users’ data at all times.

Result and Impact

As the integration of PureVPN’s APIs into TP-Link’s applications is set to launch, several positive outcomes are anticipated:

  • Enhanced Product Offering: TP-Link is expected to provide a significant value addition by offering a premium VPN service directly within its apps, meeting the increasing demand for secure internet connections.
  • Increased User Engagement: The new VPN feature is likely to attract new users to TP-Link’s apps and encourage existing users to engage more deeply with the platform, resulting in enhanced user retention and satisfaction.
  • Revenue Growth: By operating on an affiliate model, TP-Link anticipates generating a new revenue stream, earning commissions for each VPN subscription purchased through their app.

Positive User Reception: The seamless integration of VPN services is expected to receive positive feedback from users, who will appreciate the added security and convenience of accessing VPN features without leaving the TP-Link app.

Utilizing Seamless Integeration for New Opportunities

TP-Link’s forthcoming integration of PureVPN’s APIs is poised to demonstrate the powerful potential of strategic partnerships. By incorporating PureVPN’s robust security capabilities, TP-Link will not only enhance its product offerings but also provide significant value to its users while opening up new revenue opportunities. This case study highlights how companies can successfully integrate third-party services to meet evolving market demands while maintaining a seamless user experience.
